Dear friends of international athletics,
Berlin is staging the greatest international sports event of 2009! From August 15 to 23, 2009, the Olympic Stadium will host the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™. Not only will there be some 1,800 top athletes from over 200 countries coming to the Berlin Olympic Stadium, but also about 3,500 volunteers, 1,700 team officials and coaches, as well as about 3,500 media representatives. In addition, hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world are expected for this major sports event in Berlin.
In the face of their common enthusiasm for athletics, differences and boundaries will disappear - sport will become a vehicle for solidarity and international understanding.
In the unifying spirit of this event, “Welthungerhilfe” would like to channel the enthusiasm for sports into benefiting the poorest of the poor in this world.
All runners are invited to participate in the big 10 km Champions Run and to support the world aid foundation, “Welthungerhilfe”. The race will take place parallel to the World Championships in Berlin on August 22, 2009. By participating, you will be helping us to make a significant financial contribution to “Welthungerhilfe”, as the organisers will make a donation of 2 euros for each starter. In addition, by making an extra donation, you can help provide essential support for this cause.
“Welthungerhilfe”
“Welthungerhilfe” is a private, non-profit, politically independent and non-denominational relief organisation which works under a voluntary Board of Directors and the patronage of the German President. “Welthungerhilfe” provides help from one set of hands: from immediate emergency aid in the wake of a disaster to long-term projects carried out in cooperation with local partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Effective aid means helping people find new ways to determine their own lives and futures, free of hunger and deprivation - we help them help themselves.
“Welthungerhilfe” has supported some 5,000 projects in over 70 countries since its foundation in 1962. Private donors are the financial backbone of the “Welthungerhilfe”.
Active help that’s fun
Cooperation between the German Athletics Association DLV (Deutscher Leichtathletik- Verband) and “Welthungerhilfe” has a long tradition: in the olympic year 1996 the DLV and the “Welthungerhilfe” founded “Aktion LebensLäufe”, a sponsored running event for school classes and private and company- facilitated sports teams that turn their sporting activities into direct aid for selected development projects.
This enables athletes to contribute to the idea of one world in which North and South have the same opportunities. Children, youth and adults throughout Germany are enthusiastic about this exciting and easy way to actively help others in need.
